Horsemanship and EC Rider Levels

Horsemanship Lessons:

Unmounted horsemanship lessons are offered January through March on Sunday afternoons. Rider levels 1-3 are from 12:30 to 2:00; rider levels 4+ start at 2:00 and go till 3:30. These lessons cover the EC Rider Level curriculum. Learn everything from parts of the horse to bandaging to lunging. All those things you feel like you should know that you don't necessarily get to learn in lessons. All are welcome. Click here for the syllabus!

About EC Rider Levels:

Equine Canada offers a series of "rider level" exams, from 1 - 10, which encourage knowledge and horsemanship as well as practical riding ability. These exams have three phases: written, riding, and stable management; a candidate must pass all three phases with a score of 70% or above to earn the level. In the higher levels, the riding component is further divided into dressage and jumping.

At the first level, the riding component requires simply walk and trot and basic ring figures. The stable management includes things such as grooming and tacking up, while the written test evaluates knowledge of colours and horse parts. By level 8, which is the highest currently in practice and a prerequisite for the coaching exam, the candidates should be solid riders with a significant degree of practical horse knowledge.
